Alberta Food Banks, also known as the Alberta Food Bank Network Association (AFBNA) evaluates and researches programs to benefit Alberta food banks. These programs are initiated and supported by Alberta Food Banks to help its members in food and fundraising, and awareness efforts.

Members receive newsletters and are kept informed of Alberta Food Banks developments.

Alberta Food Banks provides a wealth of resource material and acts as a communications pipeline for its members so that food banks can function efficiently and share ideas.

Alberta Food Banks promotes Alberta food banks on a provincial level.

Alberta Food Banks pays for the National Food Sharing System (NFSS) pallet fees for all Alberta food banks.

All Alberta Food Banks members automatically benefit from provincial initiatives as well as national inititatives from Food Banks Canada.

Alberta Food Banks Conference & Annual General Meeting

HungerCount 2009 Released

Initiated in 1989, HungerCount is the only national survey of emergency food programs in Canada. The information the survey provides is invaluable, forming the basis of many Food Banks Canada activities throughout the year. Among many benefits, HungerCount allows Food Banks Canada to operate the National Food Sharing System on a “fair share” basis, present accurate, timely information to government, donors and media, and represent members’ key concerns at a variety of public forums.

Highlights for Alberta are:
– 53,976 individuals were assisted in March 2009
– 61% increase since March 2008
– 43% are children
– 27% report employment income
– 5 % receive Employment Insurance
– 32% receive Social Assistance
– 12 % receive disability-related income supports
– 78% of food banks saw an increase

The Current State of Canadian Family Finances 2009 Report

The Vanier Institute of the Family has released the 2009 version of the Current State of Canadian Family Finances report. This 11th annual report updates the current state of family and household finances up to the year 2009.
