Kitchens

What is a Community or Collective Kitchen?

It is a place where small groups of people come together once or twice a month to cook.

Kitchens are about much more than coming together to plan and prepare nutritious meals. They are a place where people come to have fun, socialize, share ideas and improve cooking skills. Cooking meals together saves both time and money.

The commonalities among the kitchens are similar although each one is unique, not only in how they are run but also in who attends. Participants come from all walks of life. There are kitchens that focus on cooking for families, single moms, seniors, singles, ethnic groups and new moms. The possibilities are endless. Many kitchens operate out of community centers, churches or schools.

There are approximately 180 to 200 kitchens operating in Alberta. In 2005 Alberta Food Banks assumed the responsibility of the coordination of Collective & Community Kitchen support for Alberta kitchens [this program is currently under review].

Are you interested in participating in a kitchen or starting a new kitchen in your area? If so, you are requested to contact the Alberta Food Banks office

What support is available?

Details of grants and resources available will be outlined once it is determined how many kitchens will be involved and what is available.

How can my Kitchen request support?

We are happy to announce that the AFBNA is once again, accepting applications for funding. Here is the application form. Please complete the application and email or fax it to the AFBNA office. Deadline for applications is July 31, 2013. Funds are limited so apply early.

Are there expectations for us as a Kitchen for receiving this money?

After 4 months, we will be requested to complete an evaluation form with the number of people cooking, the total number of people being cooked for, the number and type of dishes prepared and how the funds were used (i.e. the purchase of food or kitchen equipment). A specific evaluation form will be sent with the support. Evaluations must be filled out promptly to ensure eligibility for support the following year.
